what is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance, help build your self-confidence, and improve your self-image. As one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the country, women choose to have breast augmentation surgery for multiple reasons. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jay Shenaq, offers saline and silicone implants with three incision placement options (inframammary, periareolar, and transaxillary). The differences and benefits of each option will be discussed during your private consultation at our office in Sugar Land or Houston, TX. We want to help you make the right decision that will meet your personal and aesthetic goals. Our teams at Plastic Surgery of Houston will discuss everything you need to know and prepare you so that you can feel confident going into surgery.

Who is a candidate for BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Houston, TX patients who are healthy, in good medical condition, and who do not smoke can be considered for breast augmentation surgery. The majority of women who have this surgery do so because they are not satisfied with the current shape and size of their breasts. During the initial consultation, we will discuss requirements for surgery and determine what is necessary and/or realistic for your preferred goals. Suitable candidates for augmentation are women who exhibit disproportional breast size for their body shape, uneven breasts or asymmetry, a loss of firmness or breast tissue due to genetics, childbirth, and/or weight loss, and those who simply want a larger breast size. It is important to note that women who have sagging or drooping breasts may not be good candidates for this surgery; a breast lift or breast lift with augmentation is often better in these situations.

What should I consider before a breast augmentation?

Following a thorough consultation in Houston or Sugarland, TX, each patient will be given a customized treatment plan. This plan will be tailored based on many factors. It will determine the type of implant that will garner the patient's optimal results, and recommend the appropriate size, shape, texture, and brand of the implant to use. Our surgeon will consider how much native breast tissue exists and an assessment will be made regarding breast base width, bone structure, skin tone, and a comparison of body shape to the breast size. Our goal is to produce the most natural-looking outcome for each patient. We will also discuss the appropriate incision type and placement once the implant is chosen. Breast implants typically are inserted beneath the pectoral muscle. Our first two choices for the incision is at the fold of the breast or adjacent to the nipple. We offer the most advanced techniques for your case to best hide scarring and provide the most gorgeous, natural outcome.

What Can I Expect during BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Incision type as well as implant placement are factors that are generally made before surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created and then the implant will be placed into its position. There are two methods that may be used for implant placement. These are either under the pectoral muscle, or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. Where to insert the breast implant is based on varying factors including the size and type of implant, along with the expertise of Dr. Shenaq. Regardless of the incision, scarring is usually rare. Placement and location is determined based on your implant size, activity level, and body type. Contact Plastic Surgery of Houston to learn more about how a breast augmentation could be customized for you.

What Should I Expect After A Breast Augmentation?

Cosmetic breast surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery with the patient under general anesthesia. Following the incision, the chosen implant will be moved through the incision opening and deposited into a surgically created pocket and then secured into its proper position. After this, the incision is closed with skin adhesives or sutures. Each patient will be taken into a recovery area and monitored before being released. You will be sent home wearing a compression garment to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the swelling will begin to dissipate, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they fall into their new position. While individual results vary, most patients can engage in normal activities within a few days; however, physical exertion such as exercise should be avoided for roughly 6 – 8 weeks. Breast implant surgery results in beautiful outcomes that feel and appear natural. This procedure oftentimes can be life-changing for many individuals, allowing them the chance to feel more self-assured.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your total cost for breast augmentation will vary depending on your implant choices and whether you are getting any other surgeries at the same time. Once your treatment plan is made, Dr. Shenaq can talk to you about estimated costs and financing. To ensure your results match your goals and last a long time, it is important to focus on quality over low costs.

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include implants, a breast lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes loose skin and raises the position of the breasts, while augmentation enhances the shape and size. In your consultation with Dr. Shenaq, he will listen to your needs and goals before discussing your best treatment options. A combination of augmentation and lift is often included in a mommy makeover to rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, be sure to tell Dr. Shenaq during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after augmentation surgery with the right surgical technique and placement. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can alter your results, so it is better to wait until your family is complete to have breast augmentation.

Can I have my implants removed?
You may decide that you want to replace or remove your implants. If this happens, Dr. Shenaq offers breast revision surgery. In revision surgery, your current implants will be either replaced with new implants or simply removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have excess skin removed because larger implants can stretch your skin. For any concerns or questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule an appointment at Plastic Surgery of Houston to learn more about your options.

Do implants cause breast cancer?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a possible link between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This is not breast cancer but a cancer of the immune cells. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare, and when caught early, it's easy to treat. Dr. Shenaq encourages all patients with breast implants to get regular screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Plastic Surgery of Houston if you notice any concerns, like swelling or other visible changes.

How long will breast implants last?
In most cases, you can expect your breast implants to last for at least 10 – 15 years. However, this can vary from one patient to another depending on the specifics of their body. After this time, you'll likely need to either receive a replacement or have the implants removed.
