what is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, is a procedure by Houston, TX board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jay Shenaq. The procedure is for the patient who is interested in removing excess fat and skin (bagginess) in the upper and/or lower eyelids. This will give the patient a more youthful or rested appearance to the eyes. Dr. Shenaq places his incisions along the natural creases that exist in the upper and lower eyelids, effectively hiding them once healed. Excess fat and/or skin is carefully removed for a smoother appearance. This procedure can be performed alone or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures at Plastic Surgery of Houston.

am i a candidate for eyelid surgery?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who experience:

  • Bags or fat deposits under the eyes
  • Loose skin and wrinkles on the upper eyelid
  • Impaired vision due to hanging skin on the upper eyelid

how does eyelid surgery work?

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. This procedure is most commonly used to treat excess, loose, and sagging skin around the eyes that can impair vision and make a patient look and feel uncomfortable. This procedure also corrects minor wrinkles and folds around the eyes to improve your appearance. During the procedure, the loose skin around the eye is removed along with any fat pockets through small incisions. For upper eyelid treatment, the removal of excess skin and fat can improve vision and correct the natural fold of the eye.

how long is recovery from eyelid surgery?

Following eyelid surgery, patients should keep their heads elevated for the first several days. Bruising and swelling should be expected and may last up to 3 – 4 weeks. It also takes about this same amount of time for results to be noticeable. Patients should expect minimal scarring at incision points that will be almost invisible to the naked eye.

Eyelid Surgery FAQ

How much does eyelid surgery cost?
Eyelid surgery costs can vary based on whether you are getting a lower eyelid lift, upper, or both. As soon as your treatment plan has been decided in your consultation, Dr. Shenaq can discuss cost estimates. To get results that look natural and last for many years, it is better to concentrate on selecting a skilled plastic surgeon whom you are comfortable with, like Dr. Shenaq, instead of looking for the lowest cost. To help you afford a great eyelid lift, Plastic Surgery of Houston accepts many payment methods, and we can help you find low-interest financing.

Can I use insurance to pay for my eyelid surgery?
When hanging skin is affecting your vision, your health insurance might cover some of your eyelid lift. Please tell Dr. Shenaq during your consultation if you might be using your insurance. Someone at Plastic Surgery of Houston can help you submit the needed information and paperwork to your insurance company to process your claim. In most cases, you will require a diagnosis from an ophthalmologist or optometrist that an eyelid lift is medically necessary to improve your field of vision.

What are some other benefits of an eyelid lift?
Eyelid surgery not only helps to refresh your face, but it can also give you other benefits. You may find your vision field expanding when excess, hanging skin on your upper eyelid is removed. It is also easier to apply eye shadow and other makeup when your upper lid is smooth. Eliminating fine lines, paper-thin skin, dark circles, and puffy bags on your lower eyelid may help your eyes look fuller and brighter without cosmetics.

Will an eyelid lift fix wrinkles and Crow's feet?
Wrinkles on your forehead and the corners of your eyes (Crow's feet) might be better addressed with a facelift or brow lift as the improvements of eyelid surgery are confined to the upper or lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty can also be performed with a nonsurgical procedure like BOTOX®, which can smooth wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. An injectable filler may also be effective because it adds volume for a fuller appearance. During your initial consultation, Dr. Shenaq will create your personal treatment plan to fit your needs and goals.

What about nonsurgical treatments instead of eye surgery?
Skin tightening without surgery plus injectable treatments (for example, BOTOX, Restylane®, and JUVÉDERM®) may provide some improvements. Although, if you want to fix moderate to severe loose skin or want long-lasting results, eyelid surgery would be better for your needs. Once you tell Dr. Shenaq about your concerns and goals, he can explain his recommendations for a surgical or nonsurgical treatment plan. He may also recommend both surgical and nonsurgical procedures for ideal results.
